Area Information
Our origins predate the American
Revolutionary War. Early European settlers to this area included French fur trappers, English woodsmen and Scots-Irish farmers. Spartanburg was named for a unit of American Revolution forces called the "Spartan Rifles" who helped defeat the British at the Battle of Cowpens in 1781.
The town was incorporated in 1831 and then as a city in 1880. During this time, Spartanburg was booming due in large part to the expanding textile industry. The town grew quickly with many moving into villages to work the mills. During the turn of the 20th century, Spartanburg was often called "The Hub City," as almost 90 trains stopped or passed through daily.
We receive 50 inches of rain and 6 inches of snowfall per year. On average, there are 255 sunny days annually. The high in July is around 89 degrees with a low of 34 in January.
Spartanburg has seven public school districts with a total of 63 schools. There are six private and parochial schools and two special needs academies. This is truly a college town, boasting six institutions of higher learning bringing more than 10,000 students to Spartanburg County each year.
Enjoy access to two airports: The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport. The city is served by the Spartanburg Area Regional Transit Agency. SPARTA serves Spartanburg and the surrounding urbanized area with 8 routes leading to a wide variety of destinations. Amtrak's Crescent train
connects Spartanburg with the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Greensboro, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans.
Spartanburg is home to many events throughout the year including The Hub City Farmers' Market, Spring Fling, The Annual Sidewalk Arts Show, The International Festival, Music on Main, Jamboread Reading Festival, The Greek Festival, Dickens of a Christmas, Festifall, Taste of the
Backcountry and Spartanburg Bands Together.
Other attractions include the Museum of Art, the Regional Museum of History, the Science Center, Ballet Spartanburg, several golf courses, the annual Miss South Carolina Pageant and Cowpens National Battlefield. Spartanburg's Parks & Recreation division operates 22 area parks, 5
recreational facilities and the River Birch Hiking Trail.
